Historic Campanel Cottage, 1811, French Quarter, built by Barthelemy Campanel, man of free color, For sale by the owner.
Barthelemy Campanel purchased this site in 1806 and built this cottage and two adjacent Toulouse Street cottages in 1811 as rental property. Campanel, a free man of color, operated a hardware store on North Peters Street, and his family owned this cottage until 1882. After a series of subseqent owners, Leoncio Saulny, Jr. purchased the cottage in 1945 and operated a hardware store here until his death in 1984. In 2009, Dr. Jose Mata and his wife, Phyllis of New Iberia, La. purchased the property and completely renovated keeping history and archictecture pure. This Creole Cottage will live on!
